I wouldn’t want my 12-year-old son visiting an older man, in his home to be ‘given memories’ while Jonas is lying naked on a bed. I was also horrified in the book and movie with the scene where the infant is murdered by syringe to the skull. I find this book completely inappropriate for children, and it bothers me that the film is marketed to children as well. Ms. Lowry has sold 10 million+ copies of this so-called science-fiction tale partly because it is required reading in many public schools (including in Florida where I recently taught middle school). I hate to give this trash more publicity. ]]> By: Sue Korlan https://thecomicmuse.com/the-craft-of-screenwriting/truth-take-away-giver/#comment-4190 Mon, 18 Aug 2014 17:27:14 +0000 https://thecomicmuse.com/?p=2281#comment-4190 I was deeply disappointed by the movie because it seemed so completely predictable. It was obvious well ahead of time how it would more or less end. And you have just added a new reason for my disappointment. ]]> By: Geraldine https://thecomicmuse.com/the-craft-of-screenwriting/truth-take-away-giver/#comment-4174 Sun, 17 Aug 2014 19:46:47 +0000 https://thecomicmuse.com/?p=2281#comment-4174 Yes, I too came away from the movie with a flat feeling, but also with the feeling of having seen a great movie with many wonderful moral lessons. ]]> By: Daniel McInerny https://thecomicmuse.com/the-craft-of-screenwriting/truth-take-away-giver/#comment-4172 Sun, 17 Aug 2014 19:27:36 +0000 https://thecomicmuse.com/?p=2281#comment-4172 I would definitely say, SeraphicFather, that the movie also reverences human nature and the nature of reality in general, as I pointed out in the last section of my post. The theme of love/suffering is also present and not one I mentioned in my post. I still think there are some criticisms to be made of the movie, but I’m glad you brought up these points. Thank you! ]]> By: SeraphicFather https://thecomicmuse.com/the-craft-of-screenwriting/truth-take-away-giver/#comment-4167 Sun, 17 Aug 2014 17:53:27 +0000 https://thecomicmuse.com/?p=2281#comment-4167 I have yet to see the movie but I always thought the book was brilliant in the way other books of the same genre failed. It was the way it captured not merely human nature but the nature of reality in general. It seemed Lowry reverenced the human person and the reality it found itself in.
There was an underlying connection between love and suffering that struck me as the greatest acknowledgement of both the nature of things and the Christian faith. Over all I see the book as destined to stand the test of time and be numbered among the classics of its genre. ]]>

I too saw the movie last night and, while I liked certain aspects of the film, I came away feeling unsatisfied. Reading this I now understand why. Celebrating the liberal virtues without reference to the highest good leaves you flat. ]]>
